As an International student, the results accrued from a study abroad experience can vary dramatically depending upon a series of factors. As well as the place, college and programme of study each student will have a unique experience of study abroad which will vary due to personal attributes such as their reasons for choosing to go overseas, their ability to acculturate and seize opportunities.
Research Beforehand
As a prospective International student you can optimise your study abroad experience through careful planning and by carrying out sufficient research before arriving. To create maximum benefit from your time spent in your host country, being well researched will assist you in making educated decisions when choosing a college and program of study to suit you and extend a chosen set of skills.
Setting Goals
In general, students who do not have clear aims for their study abroad experience will not benefit as much as those who do, in terms of their professional development. Objectives could be; achieving a highly rated qualification, securing an internship in a company, gaining knowledge of the local market, to learning to understand and adapt successfully to varied cultures.
Type of Programme, Higher Education Institution and Location
It is a good idea to study your chosen subject in a destination where there are likely to be industry links and opportunities so that you have the added advantage of being in close proximity to leading professional bodies, organisations and research resources. As an example, London is an excellent place to study subjects within the Service Industries such as Business and Finance, Management, Hospitality or Computer services due to the high concentration and abundance of leading companies in this sector.
In order to gain professional credibility with employers from study abroad it is usually necessary to have completed an Internationally recognised qualification for a minimum of one year and to have experienced cultural immersion through work experience and social activities. In this regard, studying in a UK Higher Education Institution towards a globally renown qualification such as a Bachelor degree with Honours which lasts three to four years, or a one year postgraduate masters degree such as an MBA, or MSc would be an ideal way to impress a potential employer.
Not all colleges offer internship programs or provide support for International students, so this would be an additional factor to consider before choosing.
Finance
The costs of
study abroad will vary with location, and therefore having a clear financial plan beforehand is essential. The majority of countries do not allow International students to apply for funding once they have reached their place of study. For more information please visit
